Where white-water has done its worst.
Just imagine: you wake up in the morning, look out the door - and everything's gone! The garden, the neighbour's house, the rest of the road... everything's been washed away by the flood! And your house? It's still standing. On a giant boulder, the only one in the entire valley. You don't believe it? Here in St. Pankraz, you can see it for yourself – the "little house on the boulder" is the only one that was spared from the floods of the river Falschauer in 1882.
By the way, when looking for a room you will not need to look for a solid foundation first: although the Falschauer is still a wildly romantic mountain stream, it hasn't caused any problems for a long time!
St. Pankraz is the first village you'll encounter when you drive up from the Etschtal to the Ultental. It's situated 736 metres above sea level - and add another 56 metres for the church steeple (Gothic, with an octagonal spire):
The tower clock with its richly painted dials and the carved figures of saints on the church doors are especially worth seeing; the adjacent little Sebastian Church, which is simultaneously a war memorial, is also fascinating.
Do you want to bet that you will have a few things to talk about when you get home? No wonder then that Josef Egger was born in St. Pankraz, who was one of the most important historians of Tyrol. Just ask about him in your bookstore!
