Senale/Unsere liebe Frau im Walde – a mythical place for pilgrimages
Senale/Unsere liebe Frau im Walde (1,342 m) is a marvelously located pilgrimage site, located at only 2 km from Passo delle Palade/Gampenpass. It is arguably the oldest settlement in the area of Alta Val di Non/Deutschnonsberg. As early as in 1184 a small monastery gave shelter to many a traveler over the pass. In bad weather, the monks would even accompany the travelers on a part of the way, and were compensated for their efforts by the king, who provided them with portions of salt.
Attractions in the area are the Gothic church (finished in the 15th century) with its impressive altar, a rococo shrine with a picture of the Virgin Mary. This is a very popular spot with many local and international pilgrims.
One can stop for a bite to eat in the comfortable guesthouses, where both the best Tyrolean plain fare and the finest Italian dishes are on the menu. Friendly service ensures that your vacation will be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience.
The “Laugen” is a popular destination and is the landmark mountain of Alta Val di Non. The Laugen rates among South Tyrol’s most beautiful mountains. A beautiful hiking trail threads its way up the Passo delle Palade, where in 1997 fossilized dinosaurs were discovered.
All in all, then, Senale/Unsere liebe Frau im Walde is a truly idyllic place, with many cozy, traditional inns, restaurants and a variety of possible hikes and excursions in the surroundings.
