Poppy Seeds - a sweet temptation

Poppy seeds have earned a special place in South Tyrolean cuisine. The poppy plant grows even in high altitudes, and many of the alpine farmers of the region have set apart a small field for growing it.

Poppy seeds are the main ingredients of many desserts, like filled donuts or the delicious poppy seed strudel. Poppy seeds used to be mashed and sweetened with honey in order to produce the lovely taste which made them an indispensable ingredient on every farm. A rare treat for the palate!

Today you can treat yourself to this luxury even more easily; some Alpine farmers in Val d'Ultimo/Ultental and Alta Val di Non/Deutschnonsberg have once again set aside fields for poppy cultivation in order to make delicious, traditional desserts according to the original recipes.
