Radish - a bittersweet source of vitamins
This slightly bitter-tasting vegetable is enjoying great popularity in the Northern part of Italy. Since 1995 various types of radicchio have been cultivated on the Alta Val di Non. The initiative was supported by an EU lead-project. Today the radicchio type known as “radicchio di Treviso”, which has both a winter type and a summer type is one of the most cultivated varieties. In the high terrains of Alta Val di Non/Deutschnonsberg with their warm days and cold nights, the perfect conditions are in place for radish to grow and develop a unique taste.
Especially in the area around Lauregno/Laurein, radish cultivation is widespread.
Radicchio can be prepared raw in salads, and as a side-dish it is well suited to local mushrooms and game dishes. Radish contains extremely healthy bitter substances, and is rich in vitamin C and minerals.
It is served gratinated or grilled with meat dishes, filled pies, and even desserts.
Experience the unique taste of radish in Alta Val di Non/Deutschnonsberg during the Radish Days festival which is held here from August to September every year.
