Stelvio National Park – Italy’s largest nature preservation area
The National Park comprises parts of the regions of Lombardy, Trentino and South Tyrol. The Park is dominated by the Ortler mountain range with the famous Passo dello Stelvio/Stilfserjoch. The area extends all the way to Val d'Ultimo/Ultental in the East. The Park borders the Swiss National Park to the East and the Adamello Brenta Nature Park to the South.
The Park is also a great place if you are interested in rare plants and animal species, such as majestic ibexes and groundhogs. In the Stelvio National Park the bearded vulture or „lammergeier“ was also successfully reintroduced to the wild. The bearded vulture is a pure scavenger that has a wingspan of up to 3 meters. The National Park is one of the largest nature preservation areas in the Alps and 15,500 of the total 325,000 acres are located in Val d'Ultimo/Ultental. The area was officially declared a National Park on 24 April 1935.
