Across the great divide
The pass is situated on an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, at the lowest point between Val d’Adige/Etschtal and Val di Non/Nonstal. The road leads from Lana to Tesimo/Tisens and via San Felice/St. Felix to the pass. From the South the pass can be reached via Fondo.
The strategic location of the Passo delle Palade has always made it a point of great military interest. Between 1810 and 1815 the border between the Italian state and the Kingdom of Bavaria was located here at the pass. Just before the Second World War the Italian military completed a large bunker complex whose ruins can still be seen today. In just 9 months of construction time a gigantic bunker complex with over 2,000 meters of corridors over 4 floors was built. The complex was built for a 150-man garrison. The construction had to be stopped in 1941 due to a shortage of funding and materials.
Today the pass is very popular with motorcyclists and road cyclists thanks to the many stunning views of the valley that can be admired along the way.For mountain-bikers the Passo delle Panade is an important crossover point for transalpine tours.
