Water - a natural treasure

Val d'Ultimo/Ultental and Alta Val di Non/Deutschnonsberg are considered especially water-rich terrains.

The sheer number of lakes, streams and marshes is impressive. Not least because of this fact, many reservoirs were constructed here in the 1960s. They still deliver large amounts of clean energy today.

Water has always played an important role in the Val D’Ultimo and in the Alta Val di Non. Part of the remnants of the last Ice-age, the countless natural mountain lakes and singular moors are characteristic of the area. But the flowing waters were used by the farmers for driving Venetian saws, flourmills or smithies. In the middle of the 20th century water, the white gold of the valley was harnessed to create energy. Six man-made dams can be found today in the Val D’Ultimo and they still deliver great quantities of clean energy.
