Widummoos Biotope

The Widummoos biotope is located just behind the church in the village of Senale/Unsere liebe Frau im Walde in Alta Val di Non/Deutschnonsberg.

In this 2.3 acre marsh, a surprising number of habitats can be distinguished: temporarily flooded silted-up moors, reed marshes, spring mires, wetland meadows, and some interesting features such as sulphurous spring ponds, which are colored white because of the sulphur bacteria colonies they contain.

The biotope's flora in just as rich: extensive sedges, reeds and cotton grass, many species of orchids, gentian, primrose, marsh marigold, globe flowers, carnivorous butterwort, peat moss, alder, birch and many other species have made this wild-romantic place their home. Many aquatic insects, leeches, frogs, salamanders, snakes, and fish species have been able to find their habitat and space for reproduction here.
