Maulin - a fascinating Ice Formation

A maulin or glacier mill is a rare rock formation phenomenon. Maulins are tubular chutes in a rock, formed by the friction of sand and rock through the influence of the forces of the surrounding ice.

You can observe one of these fascinating formations along the glacial walkway in Valle di Montechiesa/Kirchbergtal, a high valley near Santa Gertrude/St. Gertraud. The walkway is best suited to an all-day round trip from Santa Gertrude/St. Gertraud climbing up into Valle di Montechiesa/Kirchbergtal and finally up to the Montechiesa/Kirchberg Alpine hut. There, hikers must take a left turn and follow path no. 13 to an Alpine pasture called Seefeld.

From there, path no. 13a leads up to Jochberg and then down again to the Alplahner/Trenta Alpine pasture. Following a ridge to the North, you will find the maulin just above the Alplahner/Trenta hut. You can make your way back via path no. 14 back to a forest road in Valle di Montechiesa/Kirchbergtal and from there return to Santa Gertrude/St. Gertraud.
